Maple Coffee Table
Maple Coffee Table - (top dim. 52"x22")This piece came from left-over salvaged maple bridge beams used as siding on a house built in Big Sky while I was working for Yellowstone Traditions. The design is original and the process from design to build proved to be a challenging one. The elipses were laid out by bending a strip of formica to the shape of the end curve, tracing it onto the wood, once for each end, then connecting them with a slight curve to form the sides. The three pronged legs on each end just seemed like a cool design as I sketched it out but figuring out how to fit the lower shelf to appear as if it were 'floating' suspended only by the two end legs was a bit nightmare-ish. The cabriole legs were each hand-shaped using a lancelot chain wheel and a grinder. The finish was an aniline dye followed by boiled linseed oil, shellac sealer and several coats of glaze. A good paste wax polish keeps it looking good.
